Vintage Fisher Price Pick Up and Peek
#2713 Dog and Puppies
(B)/ VG++
Here is a RARE, Vintage Fisher Price Pick Up 'N Peek #2713 Dog and Puppies Puzzle for your perusal. This puzzle consists of 10 interlocking pieces, five of which are equipped with a yellow peg to help little fingers easily remove the pieces from the puzzle.
Created for 2-4 year old children, this puzzle features endearing illustrations, richly endowed with detail and color. What child doesn't like looking at puppies as they rollick around to and fro? Manufactured between 1985-88, this puzzle was designed by one of Fisher Price's most celebrated illustrators, Michael J. Smollin. The detail on this puzzle is CAPTIVATING! All of the pieces, when removed, have an underlying litho depicting six puppies engaging in various activities (e.g. tugging on their Mother's leash, hiding underneath her body, pulling up flowers, resting etc.). This is a FABULOUS puzzle to reinforce beginning language concepts: (e.g. prepositions such as in/out, under, up/down; action words such as "pulling, tugging, sleeping, hiding, flying, tugging, barking);" Wh-questions such as "Who is sleeping? or "Who is pulling on the leash?"). What a great way to highlight these language-based concepts as well as other assorted vocabulary. In my opinion, this puzzle warrants an VG++ rating.
After repeatedly inspecting this puzzle, the only "flaws" I can spot are:
1. Some minor edge wear on several of the pieces;
2. Some minor paint loss on the cloud closest to the Mother dog's head;
3. Some light soiling on the white flower petals to the far left of the puzzle; I believe this will come off with a careful cleaning;
4. Some mild-moderate "feathering" of the wood on the back of several of the puzzle pieces; and
5. A few barely perceptible creases and indentations on the interior lithos.
That's it! The interior lithos are FLAWLESS (NEAR MINT-MINT). I've taken close up pictures of the above "imperfections" but I doubt that they even show in my pictures---they're that insignificant. Believe it or not, but I've actually seen some of these puzzles that came out of the factory uncut and someone later framed them and hung them on a child's wall for decoration. The colors are that bright---they're EXQUISITE!
Although you can't see it in my photos, the imprint on the back of the puzzle indicates it was made in Malta for Fisher Price, copyright 1984, Division of the Quaker Oats Co. There is some minor edge wear around the perimeter of the back side of the puzzle and some remnants of previously applied scotch tape; unfortunately, some of the white surface has been stripped off the puzzle as a result of someone attempting to remove this tape; there are also some surface scratches and a crack on the bottom of the puzzle; the crack does not appear to have permeated the back layer of the puzzle; if it wasn't for the rear of this puzzle and its aforementioned "imperfections," this puzzle would easily garner an EXC-EXC++ rating. Of course, this wear does not show while the puzzle is in play or while on display. I doubt that it shows in my photos.
This RARE wood puzzle exemplifies Fisher Price's reputation for durable, classic toys. The puzzle weighs 13 oz. UNWRAPPED and my location is Lafayette, IN (47905).
