Vintage Fisher Price Pick Up 'N Peek
#516 Circus Puzzle with Box
New in Box (C)

Here is a RARE, Vintage Fisher Price Pick-Up and Peek #516 Circus Puzzle for your inspection. This puzzle consists of 8 wooden pieces, all of which are equipped with a yellow peg. The pegs on each puzzle piece are designed to help little fingers easily remove the pieces from the puzzle. The puzzle was designed for 2-5 year old children. This puzzle is brand new! I temporarily removed it from its box for picture taking purposes. However, the original shrink wrap from the factory still is in place on the puzzle itself.
Manufactured between 1973-76, the puzzle is a great companion to one of Fisher Price's Circus- themed playsets (e.g. #900 Big Performing Circus Wagon, #902 Jr. Circus, #991 Circus Train, #135 Play Family Circus). The detail is AMAZING! All of the pieces, when removed, have an underlying litho that depicts each character performing various actions in other scenarios. Each character's name is also supplied in print. This is a EXCEPTIONAL puzzle for beginning language learners and to promote emergent literacy skills. Specifically, the puzzle provides loads of opportunities to highlight assorted circus-related vocabulary and other language- based concepts (e.g. up, down, inside, outside, on, off, wild vs. tame animals or pets), Wh- questions (e.g. "Who is riding the unicycle?" "Where is the elephant?" "Who is selling balloons?" etc.), classification or categorization (e.g. "Tell me some things you might find at the circus." ) and memory activities. By seeing the characters' names in print, the child begins to appreciate that print has meaning. The lithos are captivating and spark a lot of conversational attempts.
All of the circus lithos are intact, bright in color, and incredibly detailed. I've tried to take close-up photos of these circus performers but clarity of these may have been affected by the shrink wrap. The back of the puzzle is stamped "Made in Belgium, Right for Fisher Price, 1971 1972 1973, copyright Quaker Oats Company. Overall, this puzzle is a DELIGHT and one sure to appeal to preschool-aged children.
This wonderful puzzle is accompanied by its ORIGINAL BOX. The box itself has been subjected to some abuse during its lifetime. Unlike some of the other earlier Pick-Up and Peek puzzles, this box opens from the bottom. The box itself displays four tears, ranging in size from 1- 1 1/2," on the corners of the box. There is some moderate edge wear, some bowing, some creasing, and some rubs along the edges. The original cellophane is still in place but shows one peg-sized puncture. The box has also been squished at the top. On a scale from 1-10 with 10 being PERFECT, I would rank this box as being a 7.5/10.
This solid wood puzzle exemplifies Fisher Price's reputation for durable, classic toys. The puzzle weighs 1 lb., 6 oz. UNWRAPPED and my location is Lafayette, IN (47905).
