Vintage Fisher Price Play Family
#934 Western Town
NR MINT (H)

Wild Bill Hickock, Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, Belle Starr....what stories of the Old West these characters could tell! Now here's your chance to own a 100% COMPLETE FP LP #934 Play Family Western Town in NEAR MINT condition! Produced between 1982-84, the set originally consisted of 19 pieces. To add to the fun, I've also included 2 extra FP characters.
First of all, you have the main Western Town play base which depicts a hotel on one side and a livery stable and sheriff's office on the other side. The lithos on the play set are ROBUST and INTACT. None of the lithos display any marks, stains, or tears. Other than some dust, I only detected the following aberrations:
1. Five miniscule bubbles on the "Fisher-Price" logo on the Western Town litho along with the "hint" of three vertical creases on the same litho; these are extremely difficult to see; I literally had to hold the base up within 3" of my eyes and rotate it in the light to perceive these;
2. Three, hair-line vertical creases on the Hotel litho; once again, these are barely detectible;
3. One tiny bubble on the Blacksmith litho;
4. Two, pin-head size rubs on the saddle litho;
5. Four, intermittent hairline horizontal creases on the Depot litho .
That's it! I'm being super "nit-picky" here as I don't want anyone to be disappointed by their purchase from me. As mentioned previously, these bubbles and creases are only noticeable upon close scrutiny (e.g. holding the base up to within 3" of your eyes and rotating it in the light). These "imperfections" DEFINITELY do not detract from the overall appearance of the piece. I would consider these lithos to be in NEAR MINT condition.
The plastic surfaces are GORGEOUS! There are no chips, cracks, dings, or breaks anywhere on this piece. There are a few faint surface scratches on the brown walkway and orange roof but these are few and far between. Only one scratch, on top of the lift up flap, can be detected via touch. In general, other than the aforementioned scratch, the plastic surfaces look GREAT (NEAR MINT)!
The moving sidewalk functions smoothly when the crank is turned, propelling the characters towards a chute where they tumble down to the ground. The trap door deposits the characters inside the livery stable. The hinges on the roof over the livery stable and sheriff's office are intact. The roof lifts up to store the contents of this set inside the base. All in all, I would deem this base to be in NEAR- MINT condition. You're NOT going to find another base this SPECTACULAR short of finding one in it's original box and that has never been opened.
The set comes complete with:
1 HTF orange-colored stagecoach (EXC++-NEAR MINT condition; some rust on both axles; I'm confident the latter will come off w/an application of Naval Jelly; the stagecoach itself still possesses its original shiny lustre; once the rust is removed from the axles, this piece will warrant a NEAR MINT rating);
1 EXTREMELY RARE red stagecoach roof (NEAR MINT--few faint surface scratches; barely visible; NOTE: these roofs alone can cost up to $20.00-$25.00 and up IF you can even find one );
1 HTF green buckboard (NEAR MINT-- minimal rust on axles; should come off w/Naval Jelly; otherwise, MINTY MINT);
4 HTF pieces of wood-grained fence (NEAR MINT--MINTY; NOTE: this is the wood-grained style fencing that was UNIQUE to this set);
2 RARE brown harnesses (MINTY MINT);
1 EXTREMELY HTF brown saddle (EXC--couple of scratches and indentations on side flaps; difficult to appreciate);
1 VHTF gray crate (EXC--light surface scratches and some dulling of finish on one side of crate; may brighten with an application of Armor All Wipes and a gentle buffing);
1 HTF round green suitcase (NEAR MINT);
1 BLACK STALLION (NEAR MINT--- firm joints and all facial features intact; has BOTH EARS! Coat, mane, tail, white stockings are all SHINY; this horse LOOKS BRAND NEW!);
1 BROWN MARE (EXC++-NEAR MINT; firm joints; wonderful markings; has BOTH ears and tail; NO chews on either of these horses; no stress fractures observed at the base of this horse's ears; BEAUTIFUL specimen;
and 4 ALL PLASTIC figures UNIQUE to this set. These figures consist of:
1 HTF coral-bodied Native American Chief w/blue scarf and red trim to bonnet (EXC--red trim on bonnet slightly faded; no silver color on sides of bonnet);
1 VHTF Western Lady with green hat (EXC--one indentation on front edge of hair on right side of face; may be due to a child's tooth; found this via touch);
1 VHTF red Cowboy with black hat and moustache (MINT);
and 1 RARE blue bodied Sheriff with orange star and 10 gallon hat (MINTY MINT).
To add to the fun, I've included 2 other FP LP. These include:
1 HTF yellow-bodied Grandma with white hair in bun (NEAR MINT); and
1 VHTF tall, black bodied Mayor or Gambler with black top hat and thick black oustache (MINTY MINT).
This is truly an AWESOME playset---one that ANY FP COLLECTOR would be proud to own!!! It'd also make a tremendous gift for some lucky child. Don't let this set "ride off into the sunset!!!" It's getting EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND A SET LIKE THIS THAT IS 100% COMPLETE WITH THE STAGECOACH ROOF! The QUALITY OF THIS PLAYSET IS ONE OF THE FINEST I'VE EVER PUT TOGETHER.
I will be thoroughly Q-tip cleaning this playset and its contents with TLC. I spend a MINIMUM of 1 - 1 1/2 hours cleaning each and every VINTAGE FP play set I sell (except for those in MY ROUGH ROOM). They're ready for play or display as soon as you unwrap them.
NOTE: THIS VINTAGE FISHER PRICE PLAYSET IS NOT PART OF THE CURRENT FP RECALL! THIS PLAYSET WAS MANUFACTURED IN THE GOOD OLD U.S.A.
For those who have been given information that vintage Fisher Price Little People toys are dangerous, I'd like to offer some supplemental and contradicting information that is out there. First of all, Fisher Price products from the 1930's to 1990 were manufactured in the United States. A few of the Fun-with-Food play set components (1988-1990) and a few accessories for some of the later manufactured FP products were produced in Hong Kong. Mattel purchased Fisher Price in 1991 and subsequently shifted all production of FP toys to China.. If you look carefully at some of the information that is out there, problems with cadium being in these and other toys made in China (e.g. girls' jewelry), was discovered around 2007. There were also some other dangerous chemicals found in certain stretch plastic toys (e.g. some Barbies etc.).
The supposed issues regarding lead being in the vintage FP play sets (prior to 1990) has been exaggerated. Yes, some lead was found in the yellow, red, or black paint or plastic of these vintage toys. However, MedMD noted that this lead was not transmitted through the skin (e.g. a child's hand etc. or by just touching the item). In order for it to be a problem, the child had to put the items in their mouth and chew on them. Most of the FP play sets, with the exception of the FP #930 Garage (which was created for 2 year olds and up), were designed for 3 year olds and up. Adult supervision was recommended for children under 3 or for any child that was still mouthing or chewing on their toys. If they're not mouthing or chewing the Little People and their paint or the yellow ramp on the Garage, the toys are safe.
Here are some links to other articles that discuss these issues:

Lastly, the other big issue that is often reported regarding these vintage Fisher Price toys is that they were removed from the market because they were considered to be a choking hazard. I used to be the Director of Children's Services for two separate, five county developmental disability agencies here in Indiana. I secured a U.S. government issued plastic tube (or choking tube) to test all the toys we had in our agencies. None of these LP would fit through this tube; hence they were safe for a child when supervised and if they were not gnawing or chewing on the toys. I also worked at Texas Children's Hospital (a subsidiary of Baylor College of Medicine) in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX, for five years. I saw toddlers and preschoolers from all over the world. We used some of these FP toys with some of our clients. Once again, we never had any problems with them. Finally, I worked as a Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist and University Supervisor in Purdue University's Graduate Speech Pathology training program and Purdue University's Child Development and Family Studies Preschool and Daycare classrooms. These vintage FP toys were utilized in all of these settings with no harmful side effects. Once again, they were not introduced to children under 3 or those who were still mouthing or chewing their toys.
SO, in summary, purchasers should refrain from allowing children under 3 years of age to play with these toys without adult supervision or to offer these toys to children who may be still mouthing their toys.
This set weighs approximately 3 1/2-4 lbs. UNWRAPPED. My location is Lafayette, IN (47905).
