Vintage Fisher Price #979 Dump Trucker Play Set Complete
VG++-EXC (A)

Here is an ingenious "blast from the past." Check out this RARE, Vintage Fisher Price #979 Dump Truckers Play Set. Manufactured between 1965-1970, it is difficult to find one of these sets in this condition (VG++-EXC) and with all of its component pieces. Since this particular offering came with the plastic black balls, it probably was created between 1968-1970 or towards the end of the production run.
The set consisted of a sturdy, Masonite and plastic base with three loading bays, a fueling station, a service center, and on and off ramp. Other components of the set included three straight, light blue or dark blue bodied boys with a smiling face, a smiling face with freckles, or a frowning face with freckles along with three color coded dump trucks. The beds of the dump trucks were not only color coded (e.g. red, blue, yellow) but came in different shapes (e.g. square, circular, or triangular) to fit their corresponding truck bays. Thus, this was not only bolstered beginning color matching skills but it also served as shape sorter toy. Last, but not least, the set contained either three wood or three plastic "boulders" that could be dumped in and out of the truck.
This is an engaging set. The trucks go up the ramp, back up till they hit a white plastic barrier, then the automatically dump their cargos into the chute. The process is repeated by inserting the correct color coded and shaped truck into its respective cargo bay. This triggers the boulder to fall down from the chute into the bed of the dump truck. Children may also elect to drive their truck to the fuel station for more gas or take it to the service center for repairs.
This set has led a relatively "charmed" life. Other than some light water staining on the lower left hand side of the truck loading zones and some wear on the Dump Station litho on the top of the ramp, this base has largely escaped the ravages of time. All the lithos are present and intact. On close inspection, I can spy one small rub/puncture (?) on the Shop litho on the side opposite the ramp and some missing corners and a scrape on the Dump Station litho. The remaining lithos are free of any bubbles, stains, marks, tears, fading, or peeling. It's seldom that you can find one of these bases with all of its original lithos let alone in this condition. All four corners of the Masonite base are free of any layering, crushing, cracking etc. Similarly, the underneath side of the base is free of any staining or marks.
All of the trucks and two out of the three balls are in EXC+++-NEAR MINT condition. One ball exhibits some scuffs, scratches, and a couple of tiny teeth marks (VG+-VG++). All three dark blue, straight bodied boys with internal metal bolts are in remarkable condition given their age (e.g. 47 years old). All range from VG+-VG+++ condition with some paint loss due to age being observed on some of their bodies. The smiling boy without freckles displays the most paint wear. All of them possess their original facial features. The boy with the smiling face and freckles exhibits some kind of discoloration or paint loss on the back of his head.
This would make a wonderful addition to someone's Fisher Price collection. Made in the U.S.A., this set personifies Fisher Price's reputation for durable toys with long lasting play value.
This set weighs approximately 3 lbs. UNWRAPPED. My location is Lafayette, IN (47905).
