Vintage Fisher Price Play Family
#985 Houseboat
Complete/ EXC-EXC++ (K)
Are you already tired of the cold, miserable weather? Then it's time to take a CRUISE on your very own Fisher Price Play Family #985 Houseboat! Manufactured between 1972-76, this play set could be used on the floor or in the tub.
The set features 15 pieces, some of which are VHTF (e.g. little blue boat, lobster table, life preservers, Houseboat Captain). The Houseboat itself makes a putt-putt sound when its string is pulled. I would classify this Houseboat as being in EXC-EXC++ condition overall. Its EXTERIOR lithos are all present. The only "flaws" I can identify are:
1. A couple of pin-head size tears on the front margin of the anchor litho on the left hand side of the Houseboat;
2. Some light soiling and one scratch on the right hand anchor litho; the scratch has not permeated the litho; I believe the soiling will come off during the cleaning process;
3. Some minor wear on the edge of the Captain's console litho;
4. A major rub (e.g. @3/8" L x 1/4" H) on the upper edge of the litho on the back side of the Houseboat; and
5. A small tear (e.g. 1/8" L x 1/8" H) on the rear Houseboat litho; I will be repairing this with Rubber Cement.
Complementing these EXTERIOR lithos, the INTERIOR floor litho is colorful and intact. The only "flaw" I can detect is:
1. Some minor buckling of the cabin floor litho towards the front of this litho; the litho does not appear to have been trimmed properly at the factory; I am not going to try and remedy this for fear of messing up the rest of the litho.
10. Several instances of "chews" and kinks being discerned on the pull string; and
In my opinion, the EXTERIOR lithos are in EXC++-NEAR MINT condition. Complementing these EXTERIOR lithos, the INTERIOR floor litho is in PRISTINE condition (MINT).
Everything works as designed (the diving board pulls out, the steering wheel turns, the little blue boat fits securely on the locks in the rear etc.). After much scrutiny, the only "imperfections" I can find on the plastic surfaces are:
1. Slight yellowish discoloration on the lower edge of the white plastic trim around the perimeter of the Houseboat;
2. A few extraneous red, green, blue, and black marks on the white plastic trim on the sides of the boat; hopefully, these marks will come off during the cleaning process;
3. Moderate surface scratching on the bottom of the boat;
4. Moderate wear on the wheels;
5. Some scuffing of the top edges of the blue roof resulting in the color being displaced or leached out.
The plastic surfaces have generally retained their bright coloration and lustre. The flag spring has maintained its shiny finish as has the Fisher Price lettering on the top of the boat's roof. In contrast, several instances of "chews" and kinks are seen on the pull string. In my view, this Houseboat has led a relatively "charmed life" and is in EXC condition.
The Houseboat features the following accessories:
1 VHTF little blue boat (NEAR MINT--few faint scratches on the rails on the bottom of the boat as well as some minor yellowing around the edge of the white trim on the boat);
2 HTF yellow lounge chairs (MINT);
2 HTF red captain's chairs with triangles on the back of the chairs (one MINT; one is in EXC condition with a minor scuff on the bottom of the chair);
1 VHTF red lobster table (EXC++-NEAR MINT--minuscule edge wear on two corners of the lobster litho and on a couple of the table's bottom legs);
1 HTF yellow B.B.Q. grill (EXC--some minor edge wear on one side of the litho;
2 RARE life preservers (NEAR MINT-MINT--one has a light scratch on one side; doesn't appear to have been caused by a child's tooth);
1 VHTF, ALL PLASTIC, Captain (NEAR MINT--some "roughness" on the edge of the hat brim; no "nibbles" or chews on the brim; rest of figure is MINTY MINT);
1 VHTF, ALL PLASTIC, yellow- bodied, smiling boy with freckles and red cap facing forward (NEAR MINT--minor edge wear around the bottom of the piece; "hint" of some "nibbles" on the hat brim; very shallow and hard to see; have to hold the figure up within 3" of your eyes and rotate it in the light to see these);
1 HTF, ALL PLASTIC, red- bodied girl with blond bob and bangs (MINTY MINT);
1 ALL PLASTIC, blue- bodied lady w/blonde pony (MINTY MINT); and
1 ALL PLASTIC, Lucky w/red collar (MINTY MINT-- this Lucky is free of any "nibbles" or chews on his ears).
The Houseboat and all of its accessories will be Q-tip cleaned with TLC before sending it on to its new owner. I spend a minimum of 1 1/2 -6 hours cleaning each and every vintage Fisher Price play set I sell except for those listed in My Rough Room. I utilize a variety of cleaning products and tools to make these babies shine! My sets are IMMACULATE!
Don't let this Houseboat "sail away" without you. This set is not part of the recent Fisher Price recall for toys manufactured in China. This set was produced in the good ole' U.S.A. 43 years ago.
Due to the presence of small parts, it is recommended that this set not be given to children under 3 years of age or to those that are still mouthing their toys. Adult supervision is recommended.
This set weighs approximately 2 lbs., 9 oz. UNWRAPPED. My location is Lafayette, IN (47905).
