Vintage Playmobil #3799
Pirates' Secret Island with Box
Complete NEAR MINT (A) (retired)
Treasure Island, "Pirates of the Caribbean," Captain Morgan, Bluebeard. What do all of these have in common? Buried or hidden treasure. Check out this RARE, first version of Playmobil's #3799 Pirate's Secret Island. Manufactured in Germany from 1992-97, this play set afforded scores of youngsters hours of endless play opportunities. The set consisted of two, canny pirates (e.g. one captain with a black mustache and trihorn hat and feather and lazy crew mate with orangish hair and beard and a green sock hat) and one, long suffering prisoner with a long white beard and red bandana around his head). The prisoner is chained from an embedded round metal attachment inside the cave. This set is unusual in that it is 100% complete, with all of the smaller pieces that frequently went missing (e.g. prisoner's chain, blue cups and pitcher, lantern, wine bottle, goat, eating and cooking utensils, water barrel, and weapons). All of the foliage, palm trees, single stem flowers, both hammocks, blue and yellow parrot with its perch, and bags of "gold" are present. The set also contains a row boat with two oars, two sea turtles that really float, and a captivating island that features both a cave and a secret passage. The pirates can store their treasure chest, which really opens and closes, inside the cave or the secret passage way that leads to the opposite side of the island. There, in the dark of night, they can load or unload their gold into their row boat which can be moored to a nearby rock formation. When not plotting some new adventure, the pirates can take a nap in their hammocks.
All of the items in the set have retained their original bright coloration. The base and all of its accessories are in NEAR MINT condition. The only "imperfections" I can spy are:
1. A couple of gray marks on the underneath side of the island; these may or may not come off during the cleaning process:
2. A faint, green "shadow" on the beach next to the single stem flowers and rowboat tie off; once again, I'm not sure whether or not this will come off during the cleaning process;
3. A 1" L x 1/4" W light streak across the beach near the curve between the cave and escape tunnel; for some reason, this streak is slightly lighter than the rest of the beach. I don't know what caused this; it could have occurred during the manufacturing process.
The box is in great shape. On a scale from 1-10 with 10 being MINT, I would judge this box to be an 8/10. Upon close inspection, I can see a few creases on the bottom of the box, some edge wear on the sides of the box, and a repaired torn corner of the box. There are also two "punched in" spots on the front of the box that haven't not gone through the surface of the box. The colors and different portrayals of pirate life are full bodied in nature. In addition, box's graphics show that this is the first edition of this Playmobil set.
This set weighs 7 lbs., 8 oz. UNWRAPPED. As the original box measures 27" L x 18" W x 6" H, it will require another oversized box to protect it in transit. My location is Lafayette, IN (47905).
